5 Tips for Storing Medicine at Home

February 28, 2026AtmosMed Pharmacy

1. Keep Medicines in a Cool, Dry Place

Most medications should be stored at room temperature, between 20-25°C. Avoid placing them near windows, stoves, or in the bathroom where heat and humidity can break down the active ingredients.

A bedroom drawer or a dedicated medicine cabinet in the living area is ideal.

2. Always Check the Expiration Date

Expired medicines may not only lose their effectiveness — some can become harmful. Make it a habit to check expiration dates every three months and properly dispose of anything past its date.

Tip: Write the date you opened the medicine on the box. Some liquid medications expire faster once opened.

3. Keep Medicines in Their Original Packaging

The original packaging protects medicines from light and moisture, and keeps the dosage instructions and batch number accessible. Never transfer tablets to unlabeled containers.

4. Store Medicines Out of Children's Reach

Place all medications — including vitamins and supplements — on a high shelf or in a locked cabinet. Child-resistant caps are helpful but not foolproof.

If a child accidentally takes medication, call your local poison control center or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

5. Separate Internal and External Medicines

Keep medicines you take by mouth (tablets, syrups) separate from those applied externally (creams, ointments, drops). This simple habit prevents dangerous mix-ups, especially during emergencies.

Following these five tips ensures your medicines stay effective and your family stays safe. If you have questions about how to store a specific medication, feel free to ask your pharmacist — we're here to help.
